FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BANYAN ANNOUNCES VINES VERSION 4.11
VINES 4.11 Adds Support For More Platforms and Peripherals,
Supports New X.29 Dial-in, ICAplus Communications Options
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 23, 1991 -- Banyan Systems today introduced
Banyan~ VINES~ Version 4.11 with a broad set of new capabilities
that deliver the power and flexibility demanded by companies using
and developing enterprise-wide applications.
Introduced at the Association of Banyan Users International (ABUI)
meeting, VINES 4.11 adds increased multiprocessing server and
high-capacity peripheral support, diskless client support, greater
security and management flexibility, additional application
development tools, higher-speed wide area connections, faster
dial-in links and ISDN connectivity.
"The capabilities and applications development tools of VINES 4.10
introduced in April created the framework for the development of a
new generation of distributed applications," said James D'Arezzo,
Banyan Vice President, Marketing. "As companies move
mission-critical applications to distributed computing
environements, the demand for more power and platform support has
increased significantly. VINES 4.11 was created in response to
those requirements."
VINES 4.11 includes an enhanced version of VINES SMPTM to add the
AT&T StarServerE to the symmetric multiprocessing servers supported
by VINES. VINES Version 4.11 also offers enhanced support for the
COMPAQ Intelligent Disk Array systems and internal tape drives;
support for diskless client workstations; a broader array of LAN
adapters; administrator-forced logout for tighter security; remote
booting and enhanced StreetTalkTM Directory Assistance (STDA) for
more flexible management; closer integration of StreetTalk with
application development tools; and OS/2 NetBIOS support for
application sharing between DOS and OS/2 users.
VINES 4.11 Supports New Wide Area Products
In conjunction with the announcement of VINES 4.11, Banyan today
introduced new communications capabilities, X.29 Dial-in and the
ICAplus Intelligent Communications Adapter. CCITT-compliant, X.29
Dial-in allows multiple PCs to dial into a VINES 4.11
server over a single X.25 connection. This provides network
administrators with greater flexibility in configuring remote
access, faster transmission speeds and more cost-effective
connections. With X.29 Dial-in, VINES 4.11 is the only network
operating system that allows wide area connections through X.25 or
ISDN networks.
Offering hardware and software compatibility with Banyan's existing
ICA communications adapters, the new ICAplus Intelligent
Communications Adapter offers increased performance up to
384kb/second, as well as fractional T1 connectivity. The ICAplus
provides users a cost-effective alternative to bridge/router, or
gateway solutions. The ICAplus offers unprecedented flexibility in
a communications adapter with its ability to simultaneously support
multiple protocols, including High-speed Data Link Control
(HDLC), Synchronous Data Link Control (SDLC), Asynchronous,
Bisynchronous, X.25, and X.29.
New Features in VINES 4.11
The increased support in VINES 4.11 for high-end server platforms
gives administrators and developers greater flexibility and power
for implementing distributed applications. VINES SMP has been
enhanced to leverage the power and scalability of the StarServer
E, with the ability to dynamically balance network loads over four
Intel 80486 CPUs for the most demanding applications. Support for
Distributed Processing Technology (DPT) disk controllers, 4GB
internal disk storage capacity and full 256MB memory capacity gives
VINES SMP users the power and flexibility to meet current and
future network demands.
Working closely with COMPAQ, Banyan added support for several new
high capacity, high-performance storage and backup devices. The
Intelligent Disk Array Expansion system provides users with the
ability to expand the disk storage of a VINES 4.11 server
to 19.8GB of online storage.
VINES 4.11 also supports the IBM Remote Program Load (RPL)
protocol. Using RPL, customers can increase the level of security
by installing diskless PC's as client workstations. This gives
customers an alternative to costly client workstations and
prevents unauthorized downloading of sensitive data to local disk
drives.
VINES 4.11 also provides new security and management features. A
new command allows network administrators to logout a VINES user to
prevent unauthorized access to the network and protect sensitive
data. The product's remote server reboot capabilities
provide network administrators with the control necessary to reboot
an unattended VINES server.
STDA has been enhanced in two ways. It allows VINES administrators
the ability to customize how they view names in STDA. Second, it
allows tighter integration of third party applications such as
cc:Mail and Lotus Notes with VINES by accessing user
attributes through the NetRPC Application Programming Interface.
With VINES 4.11, OS/2 users are able to establish peer-to-peer
communications to share applications over NetBIOS, increasing the
number of applications that can be implemented on the network and
shared between DOS and OS/2 users.
VINES 4.11 Upgrades, Availability and Pricing
This release directly benefits VINES users who have purchased the
VINES Subscription Program. An upgrade to VINES 4.11 will be
provided to eligible subscription holders at no additional cost.
VINES users who are not under the VINES Subscription Program can
